Whoever wins the grudge match between Kentucky and Tennessee could be in line for a no. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Throughout the year, the SEC’s two best teams have been Tennessee and Kentucky. Even though LSU finished ahead of both in the regular season, the Wildcats and Volunteers have assembled better resumes, making them each a worthy selection for the top line in the brackets.

The Volunteers actually spent time at no. 1 in the polls this season, ripping off a 19-game winning streak, but lost to both Kentucky and LSU to fall to third in the conference standings entering the SEC Tournament. Tennessee got its quest for an SEC title off to a good start, beating Mississippi State 83-76 to advance to today’s showdown with Kentucky.

The Wildcats have traditionally dominated the SEC Tournament, going home with the title each of the last three years, and looked very comfortable in a 73-55 win over Alabama yesterday. Tyler Herro scored 20 points for Kentucky in the win, and the Wildcats saw invaluable forward Reid Travis return to action after missing the past several weeks with a knee injury. Travis scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

These two teams split their regular season meetings, with each team defending their home floor in blowout fashion. Whoever walks away from the third matchup with a victory will emerge as the heavy favorites to claim the SEC Tournament title and the likely no. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament that comes with it.
