4. New England Patriots

It seems like this path has been gone down before. In 2014, the New England Patriots used a second-round pick on promising quarterback prospect Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois. By all indications, he would eventually be the successor to legendary quarterback Tom Brady. That year, the club was coming off another successful season but it would end in a loss at Denver in the AFC Championship Game.

Since ’14, the Pats have been in the Super Bowl four times in five years and won two more titles. And it’s been Brady at the controls throughout. And with the trade deadline approaching in 2017, head coach Bill Belichick and the organization made the decision to deal Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for a second-round pick. Once he got into the starting lineup for Kyle Shanahan’s team, he was an immediate hit. But that’s a story for another time.

Now Brady will turn 42 years old in August, which is still three years away from 45 – an age he has expressed playing until. And given his performances the last few years, there’s no reason to believe that he won’t be around later than sooner. But Belichick does have 12 draft choices at his disposal this year, a one, a pair of two’s and three third-round selections. And while 45 is quite the goal, this is a season-to-season sport when it comes to how the body feels and responds.
