John Calipari’s lifetime deal, panic at the ballpark, NFL speed dating

Coach Cal’s lifetime pact with the ‘Cats, the sky is falling for these MLB teams and the NFL tries their hand at speed dating.

Let’s make a deal

The day after losing to Auburn in the Elite, Kentucky and John Calipari agreed to a lifetime contract. What the heck is a lifetime contract anyway? That sounds more like a prison sentence than a contract extension. Only John Calipari could find a way to steal the spotlight from the Final Four when Kentucky isn’t even playing in it. That’s blueblood narcissism right there.

Panic at the ballpark!

We had high high hopes for these MLB teams but the first week has not been kind to the Braves, Cubs, Red Sox, Astros and Yankees who are a combined 7-14. The only possible way to turn the tide is to fire the managers and everything will be solved. That always fixes things.

NFL speed dating

It’s draft month and teams are visiting with prospects in the NFL’s version of speed dating. Teams will take potential draft picks out for dinner, like the Cardinals did with Nick Bosa or the Raiders did with Kyler Murray over the weekend. Just like any marriage, it all starts with a first date and awkward small talk. But if it works out well, there is a ring at the end of it.

What’s going on?

On this day in 1939, Marvin Gaye was born. This gives me an excuse to share the clip of his rendition of the national anthem at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game. For a deeper dive on the performance and the significance, check out Justin Tinsley at The Undefeated on

The Whitney Houston national anthem at Super Bowl 25 in 1991 is the only other acceptable answer for the best rendition since Francis Scott Key wrote what would become the U.S. national anthem in 1814. The more you know.
