Phil Mickelson gives Jake Owen profane refund for PPV match with Tiger
Jake Owen spoke for a lot of people in regard to the Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson match, but Mickelson made sure to give a nice refund.
In a made-for-television event, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson had a match on the day after Thanksgiving last year. At the wedding of Jordan Spieth the next day, country singer Jake Owen made sure his displeasure was known.
The Tiger vs. Phil match cost millions $29.99 to see, but a glitch led to it eventually being streamed for free on BR/Live. Owen was apparently one of those who paid for it, but that didn’t seem to be the biggest issue for him. It was the quality of the golf being played.
Owen is a 1-handicap golfer and he played a tournament on the Web.com Tour last year. So he knows a bit of which he speaks and was not afraid to tell Mickelson about it after a few drinks at Spieth’s nuptials.
Owen recapped the exchange on Barstool Sports’ “ForePlay” podcast. (h/t to Bill Speros of Golfweek).
"“I was like, ‘Hey, Phil, you owe me (expletive) $29.99 for wasting four hours of my life with the (expletive) golf I’ve ever seen,’” Owen recalled telling Mickelson, who now has 44 PGA Tour victories. “’I want my $29.99 back and apologize to me for some (expletive) golf.'”"
Mickelson proceeded to pull out a wad of cash, gave Owen a $100 bill and followed with a nice parting shot.
"“I won 90,000 of these yesterday. Take one of these and go (expletive) yourself,” he said."
Here’s an uncut, NSFW video clip of Owen’s interview.
Mickelson confirmed the story with a reply on Twitter.
Mickelson clearly does not suffer fools, as he’s won multiple majors and made a lot of money on the golf course. That doesn’t give someone the right to be rude, but Mickelson simply put Owen in his place with a 300-plus percent refund and a profane sentiment on the back end.
Well played, Lefty.
