DraftKings MLB Late Picks April 4: Trevor Bauer Power Hour

Rain has already washed out the White Sox and Cardinals, so we are down to a perfectly split slate with four early and four late games for our DraftKings MLB tournaments. I can get used to this having games postponed the day before business. It makes it so much easier to plan our attack.

The all day lineup went well yesterday even with the deGrom fade since I used Gordon, Kike, and Jose Abreu. The main slate I did cash with the Cole/Taillon line. The Braves stack sans Albies didn’t pan out.

The weather looks good all night. It will be a little brisk in Cleveland, but beautiful in Atlanta despite the slight breeze.

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on, and we all attack the slate from different angles.

DraftKings MLB Late Pitcher Plays:

Top Tier:

Trevor Bauer ($11,300): Bauer is expensive, but he might be worth it. He was dominant in the opener, putting up 30 DraftKings points against the Twins. Surprisingly, Bauer has only faced one current Blue Jays player. The Jays have been pretty good so far, but pretty good wont cut it if Bauer is as filthy as he was in the opener.

Middle Tier:

Yu Darvish ($8,300): Darvish was rough in the opener, and the Braves at SunTrust may not provide much of a reprieve. The current Braves are just 15-70(.214) off of Darvish with only one homer and three runs to go with a whopping 29 strikeouts. It’s hard to trust Darvish if you watched him in the opener, but the past stats suggest there could be sneaky value here.

Matt Harvey ($7,600): The current Rangers are just 1-18(.056) against Harvey so far. It’s a very small sample size though, so proceed with caution. Harvey was decent in his first outing this year, but the strikeouts from hits Mets days weren’t there. Harvey had just one strikeout in six innings. Texas is a solid offense, and I don’t care how much they have struck out early on. That doesn’t mean Harvey can ring them up at this stage. I’ll believe it when I see it, which means that this is a substantial risk for a reward that may or may not exist.

Bargain Pitchers:

Max Fried ($7,300): Fried has only faced the Cubs once. He pitched well in that short appearance last year. The Braves seem poised to let Fried pitch a little longer in games this year, but there’s risk here. The Braves treated him with kid gloves last year, and starting him against an offense like the Cubs is risky. However, Fried should be able to neutralize the park’s catering to left handed power.

Aaron Sanchez ($7,000): Sanchez has dominated the Indians so far, holding them to just eight hits in 52 at bats(.154) with two homers, five runs, and 15 strikeouts. This lineup is less potent without Lindor, but you also have to take a leap of faith with a lineup this potent. The good news is that you get nice strikeout potential at a low price with Sanchez.

My picks: Bauer, Harvey

CINCINNATI, OH – SEPTEMBER 28: Corey Dickerson #12 of the Pittsburgh Pirates doubles to drive in a run in the first inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on September 28, 2018 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images) /

Leonys Martin and Hanley Ramirez have the Cleveland homers off of Aaron Sanchez. Jose Ramirez is 2-5 with a RBI in his small sample size.

I’m all over the Pirates lefties against Tyler Mahle. Mahle had a decent spring, but he has been torched by lefties in his career. Southpaws are hitting .298 with 15 homers in just 238 at bats. Corey Dickerson has homered twice off of Mahle. Adam Frazier, Colin Moran (who is 4-5), and Josh Bell look really good too.

You can stack the other side of this game too. The Reds are hitting .393 with five homers and 17 runs in just 61 at bats against Jordan Lyles. Some of these were at Coors, but it’s not all a fluke. Joey Votto is 7-14 with five walks, two homers, and three RBI against Lyles already. Jose Peraza, Yasiel Puig, and Matt Kemp has homered off of him as well.

Stats be damned, I don’t trust Darvish. I’d rather take a shot at him with Ender Inciarte or Freddie Freeman. Nick Markakis is a strong play on the cheap as well. Josh Donaldson‘s exit velocity off of Darvish is 99.8 mph, so he has hit him as hard as you can while the ball stays in the park.

If you don’t trust Max Fried, I would go after him with a mini stack of Albert Almora, Javy Baez, and Kris Bryant. I also like Ben Zobrist if he’s leading off again.

It’s hard to believe that the Angels could give anyone issues right now, but the current healthy Angels are hitting .321 with two homers and 15 runs in just 84 at bats. It’s not Trout who has done the damage either. He’s just 1-3. Albert Pujols is 5-12 with two homers, five walks, and five RBI. Jonathan Lucroy is 10-30 with four RBI. A hot Kole Calhoun is a nice play too.

Matt Harvey is a bit of an enigma right now. If you want to go after him, Joey Gallo is the obvious choice. I’ll have Gallo as a one off, but there are better stacks to be had. There’s a chance that Harvey could recapture his old form I guess.
