Best remaining NFL free agents: Where do they fit?
Eric Berry, Safety
Of all the players that are still free agents, none pose a bigger gamble for their next team than former All-Pro safety Eric Berry.
The former Kansas City Chief was an elite, top-of-the-league safety when he re-signed with Kansas City in 2017. Having overcome a torn ACL and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, in addition to being a top-rated player at his position, Berry had become a local hero of sorts. The Chiefs then signed him to the richest safety contract in league history two years ago at six years and $78 million.
Fast forward two years: many Chiefs fans bemoan that former General Manager John Dorsey waiting too long for the signing, and begrudge Berry’s inability to stay healthy/get on the field in 2018 and ’19. Now, Berry finds himself out of a job.
Will he be back to his 2016 form this fall, or will whichever team sign him and be left hanging?
Teams that make the most sense: Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Oakland.
Someone is going to take a gamble here, but they’re going to protect themselves. Expect a small guarantee, with lots of playing time/performance incentives, and team opt-outs after the first year.
Prediction: Cleveland Browns on a two-year, $21 million deal with $8 million fully guaranteed.
