With the reigning NFL MVP residing in Kansas City for the next 15 years – AFC West general mangers must consider him when planning their drafts.

Patrick Mahomes is already changing the trajectory of teams in the AFC West. The 2019 NFL Draft will be the first indicator of the direction franchises have chosen.

If you’re an personnel guy for an AFC West team, beating Patrick Mahomes must be at the forefront of your mind when making every decision your team makes from this point moving forward.

Its not likely making that declaration is bold. Before anyone gets bent out of shape – I acknowledge that there is a chance that Mahomes’ first year was more of a mirage than a non-stop ticket to Canton. But, even if that is true, no personnel director in the league would advise you to bet on that.

I would ask the following questions if I were working towards building a team to compete with Mahomes’ Chiefs:

  1. Do we have our quarterback of the present and future?
  2. Does your offense possess the firepower to score 27+ points per game?
  3. Do you have the defensive personnel to challenge Mahomes?

With this in mind let’s take a look at the other teams in the AFC West and see where they stand, and how that may implicate their 2019 NFL Draft strategy.
