WWE 205 Live recap for April 9, 2019: Tony Nese vs Buddy Murphy
Tony Nese vs Buddy Murphy for the Cruiserweight Championship
The championship introduction before the match sets the tone for the main event. It starts off with dual chants for both wrestlers and the fans are into this match more than most weeks of 205 Live, perhaps because of the post-WrestleMania SmackDown crowd in attendance. Many counters are exchanged in the early portion of the match, and it goes back and forth with a few quick covers.
Nese talks trash about Murphy’s claims of being unstoppable not ringing true at WrestleMania. The two men start battling outside as Murphy throws Nese over the commentary table to gain control. A wicked knee to Nese’s face only gives Murphy a two-count. The two are back on the outside for a short while when Murphy delivers a beautiful dive over the top rope.
A series of counters leads to Nese hitting the Fosbury Flop as he hears “205” chants from the fans in attendance. Nese throws Murphy into the barricade a few times to further punish the challenger. As an ultimate revenge, Nese throws Murphy over the commentary table in a role-reversal from earlier in the match.
Murphy kicks out of a few close calls to continue the match despite Nese’s dominance for a few minutes. A reverse from Murphy allows him to deliver a kick to Nese’s face and a strong powerbomb. Nese kicks out as well, keeping the match afloat while the fans show appreciation for their efforts with applause. Murphy attempts to hit his big knee, but Nese reverses it into a suplex towards the turnbuckles.
Both men end up on the ring apron trying to take over out before Murphy hits his knee sending each man to hit the floor. Nese launches Murphy on the table with a back body drop. Murphy gets back into the ring at the last second of the 10 count to continue the match. A few trademark moves from Murphy all end with a two-count before Nese kicks out.
Nese hits a reverse hurricanrana before delivering a few brutal knees to the face of Murphy. A cover allows Nese to get the three-count and retain his title. Nese remains the Cruiserweight Champion after his second consecutive win over Murphy in just a few days. Commentary mentions that the winner of Oney Lorcan vs Cedric Alexander next week could become the next contender for the title.
Winner: Tony Nese
Nese stands tall to the end the show posing with the title and enjoying the greatest week of his professional life.
