WNBA champion and reigning MVP Breanna Stewart appears to have suffered a serious leg injury in the Euroleague title game.

Last year was magic for Breanna Stewart and the Seattle Storm. The Connecticut alum established herself as the most dominant player in the WNBA, averaging 21.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, leading the Storm to the WNBA’s best record and a WNBA championship.

So far, 2019 looks like it could be better.

Like many WNBA stars, Stewart spends her domestic offseasons overseas playing for international teams where the player salaries are often much higher. Stewart hadn’t missed a beat, averaging 21. points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game while leading Russian club Dynamo Kursk to the Euroleague Final.

But just before halftime of the title game, Stewart received a dribble handoff at the top of the key and, after firing up a jumper, landed on the foot of fellow WNBA star Brittney Griner. She immediately collapsed, writhing in pain. Be warned, although this is not explicitly gruesome like some of the lower leg injuries we’ve seen in the NBA recently, it’s not easy to watch.

As of this writing, neither Dynamo Kursk or the Seattle Storm appear to have offered any updates on Stewart’s injury. There were rumors on Twitter about a torn Achilles, according to WNBAinsidr. Making a diagnosis from a few seconds of video and without any medical knowledge is not a great idea but Stewart’s reaction certainly makes this look serious.

Next. The Seattle Storm could be building the WNBA's new dynasty. dark

The WNBA held their draft last week and the beginning of their regular season is just weeks away, with the first games being played on May 24. For Stewart, the Storm and basketball fans around the world, let’s hope this one isn’t nearly as bad as it looks.
