There’s a reason the sports world is captivated by coverage of the NFL Draft. The drama of the event simply makes it must watch television. No matter how much you prepare for what you believe will happen, there will inevitably be a multitude of twists and turns that no one saw coming.

The purpose of this piece is to walk you through five bold predictions for this year’s draft. For the purposes of clarity, Kyler Murray going No. 1 to the Cardinals is not a bold prediction. Projecting Murray to the Patriots at No. 32 would be. There’s a big emphasis on the word “bold” when it comes to all five projections.

5. The 49ers will trade the No. 2 pick

Almost every credible mock draft out there believes the 49ers are set to take Nick Bosa at No. 2. The only problem with that logic is that he’s not a great schematic fit for what they want to do on defense. Many people argue that his talent is good enough to squash those concerns, but it could easily push San Francisco to listen to trade offers.

Look for teams like the Giants and the Falcons to quietly see how much it might cost to swap places with San Francisco in the first round. The 49ers aren’t going to move down on the cheap, but they will listen to reasonable offers that give them more draft capital on Day 2. In particular, the idea that Dave Gettleman would move up to take a guy some people is destined to become a Pro Bowl edge rusher is very intriguing.
