With nothing left to play for except pride – a quality that many fans seem to feel is in short supply with this squad – and no glamour ties among their remaining games, it’s safe to say that Real Madrid’s players, coach and supporters would prefer that the season was already over. The club that had contested Champions League finals in each of the past three years was out of the running for a trophy of any kind by the second week in March.
In contrast, Athletic Bilbao are a team on the up. Eduardo Berizzo, a former assistant of Marcelo Bielsa who’d taken Celta Vigo all the way to semi-finals of the Europa League in 2017, failed to meet expectations and didn’t last until the New Year, winning only two games in the process. But Bilbao have been transformed since the appointment of Gaizka Garitano in early December and currently lie seventh, just three points off the European spots.
