2019 Wells Fargo Championship: PGA DraftKings DFS Picks

After a “bye week” in the Fantasy Golf universe, we are back! If you got a chance to watch the Zurich Classic, I’m sure you can understand why no DFS platform has figured out a scoring system yet. I’m sure in the upcoming years, DraftKings will have Zurich Classic tournaments, but just not quite yet.

The Wells Fargo Championship features a fairly strong field that is somewhat top-heavy, as six of the top-15 golfers in the world will be teeing it up. One of them being the 2018 champion, Jason Day. Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Paul Casey,  and Tony Finau round out that group of elite golfers.

Quail Hollow Club has played host to the Wells Fargo Championship since the tournament first began back in 2003. Since then, Rory McIlroy is the only player to repeat as a winner. The course plays fairly long, stretching over 7,500 yards. It is a Par 71 that includes eight Par 4’s that are 450 yards or longer, and three Par 5’s, all of which range from 540-600 yards.

Being a longer course, I will be focusing in on a few key stats that have helped golfers succeed here at Quail Hollow. First, I will be looking at Driving Distance, which can come up big on both the longer, and shorter Par 4’s. Since the players will be left with longer approach shots, another key stat to consider will be Proximity from 200+ yards out. Lastly, Strokes Gained: Approach the Green will be weighed heavily.

Below is a link that breaks down which players in the Wells Fargo field this week excel in the key stats:

2019 Wells Fargo Championship: PGA DraftKings DFS Picks

Rory McIlroy $11,800

As I mentioned on the first slide, McIlroy is the only one to win the Wells Fargo Championship more than once. Since his most recent win at Quail Hollow back in 2015, McIlroy has three straight top-25’s. He finished T16 a year ago which would have been much higher had he not shot a 76 (5+) round on Friday

McIlroy ranks inside the fields top six in Driving Distance, and SG: Approach. He also rates out well when looking at Proximity from 200+ yards, as he is 21st in the field. The price tag may seem like a lot, but some exposure to Rory is recommended. The course history, recent form, and key stats all line up.

Hideki Matsuyama $10,100

Though there are some strong plays at the top, Matsuyama is the best value. Rostering him as opposed to McIlroy leaves you with $1,700 more which averages out to $340 more for each of your remaining five roster spots.

Matsuyama has also had success at the Wells Fargo Championship, making the cut in each of the past five years with three top-20 finishes. He is also the only player who ranks inside the top-10 in the field in all three key stat categories. Matsuyama has been making cuts on a consistent basis, he just needs to string four full rounds together in order to contend. Matsuyama will be a staple in my lineups this week.

Alternate Options:

Tony Finau ($9,300) has made four straight cuts here with three top-30’s. Top-20 in the field in both Driving Distance, and Proximity from 200+.

Phil Mickelson ($9,100) is a model of consistency at the Wells Fargo Championship. Played the event 15 straight years with eight top five finishes. Only missed cut came in 2017.

Patrick Reed $8,800

A player who should not be very popular this week, is Patrick Reed. He is not known as a “bomber”, ranking 85th on tour in Driving Distance. This alone, will have many off of him this week. Reed has five top-25 finishes since the start of the year, but has not been trending upwards as of late. He’s made three of his last four cuts, with no finishes inside the top-35.

The course history at Quail Hollow is what has my eyes on Patrick Reed. He has never missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship in his six attempts and has two top-10’s in the past two years. Reed is worth a look in tournaments and is priced fair enough to be an option in cash games, as well.

Luke List $8,000

Here we go again. Luke List showed up inside the top-20 in all three key statistics we are looking at, and top-10 in both Driving Distance, and Proximity from 200+. He is behind just Cameron Champ in terms of Driving Distance, so this should give him an advantage at Quail Hollow.

He came into the Wells Fargo Championship last year with back to back missed cuts. List then continued his strong 2018 season with a T9 following a strong weekend. Priced at just $8,000, Luke List is in play in all formats.

Alternate Options: Byeong Hun An ($8,300), Keegan Bradley ($8,000), Trey Mullinax ($7,500), and Chesson Hadley ($7,000).

Danny Willett $6,800

Though he has been inconsistent as of late, Willett does rate out wel when looking at the key stats. He ranks inside the top-15 in the field when looking at SG: Approach, and Proximity from 200+. If you want a low-owned tournament play, look to Willett at $6,800.

More from FanSided

Cameron Davis $6,400

The the consecutive missed cuts on tour don’t do him much justice, but Quail Hollow does suit Cameron Davis well. The 24 year old rookie is 11th in the field in Driving Distance averaging 307 yards of the tee. He also ranks inside the field’s top-30 when looking at SG: Off the Tee.

Nate Lashley $6,200

Now playing under Conditional status, Lashley will not be as high on the priority ranks. He ranks first in the field in Proximity from 200+ yards and 11th in SG: Approach the Green. It’s a longshot, but if Lashley can sneak through and make the cut, he is a nice option at the bottom of the board.

Leaker of the Week: Joey Garber $6,000

Joey Garber couldn’t have asked for a much worse rookie season. Aside from the alternate events (Puerto Rico Open and Corales Punta Cana), Garber has missed the cuts in his previous four starts, finishing T125 or worse in all four.

Currently ranked 200th in the FedEx Cup Standings, Garber has a lot of work to do if he wants to regain his PGA Tour card for next season. While you’re scrolling through the leaderboard this week, make sure to check out the bottom, to find Garber.
