The Yankees are getting some star players back soon, but general manager Brian Cashman has informed the public that Luis Severino won’t return for quite a while.

Luis Severino came into the 2019 season expecting to be the ace of the Yankees starting staff. Unfortunately for fans in the Bronx, he won’t be ready to assume that role anytime soon.

According to general manager Brian Cashman, Severino won’t be in contention to rejoin the Major League roster until sometime after the All-Star break. The talented right-hander has been sidelined with shoulder and lat issues so far this year. The fact that he won’t be back until mid-July isn’t necessarily a surprise for Yankees fans, but it’s still bad news.

Severino’s absence from the rotation only compounds the recent injury to fellow starter James Paxton. Cashman recently told reporters that the impressive southpaw will only miss a maximum of three weeks due to inflammation in his knee. That isn’t great news for manager Aaron Boone, but the team should be able to survive a relatively short absence from Big Maple.

Domingo German has done a stellar job of filling in for Severino to date and he will be counted on to remain in the rotation for the foreseeable future. Paxton’s injury will push Jonathan Loaisiga back into the frame to start games over the next several weeks. He has the stuff to be an above-average starter at the Major League level, but his own history of injuries has everyone in the organization very concerned about counting on him for too many innings in 2019.

While Cashman’s recent news about the Yankees pitching staff wasn’t encouraging, there are some positive updates about position players who may soon return to Boone’s lineup. Clint Frazier is on pace to be activated from the Injured List on Monday or Tuesday. Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Hicks aren’t quite that close to making an impact in the Bronx, but both are taking positive steps in their respective recoveries. It’s not out of the question to think that both outfielders will rejoin the Major League club within the next two to three weeks.

Expect Severino’s absence to continue to loom large until he is back on the mound and pitching at his best. The Yankees will certainly treat him with extreme caution, but his absence limits the ceiling of this year’s team. It’s hard to envision this team making real noise in the postseason without their ace on the hill.
