Ohio State quarterback Matthew Baldwin is transferring to play for TCU where he’ll compete for the starting job this fall.

The quarterback carousel continued on Tuesday with Ohio State quarterback Matthew Baldwin transferring to TCU. The minute Justin Fields made the decision to transfer from Georgia to Ohio State the quarterback room in Columbus seemed a little too crowded. Baldwin has elected to remove that concern from first-year head coach Ryan Day’s mind.

Instead of staying at Ohio State to compete with Fields, Baldwin will be taking his talents back to his home state of Texas. The Austin native will transfer to TCU immediately and will petition the NCAA to grant him immediate eligibility.

Interestingly, there’s plenty of competition waiting for Baldwin with the Horned Frogs. Kansas State transfer Alex Delton is also coming to play for Gary Patterson. Last year’s part-time starter Michael Collins is also hoping to hold on to his job. TCU also has a pair of intriguing freshman talents coming to campus in the form of Justin Rogers and Max Duggan.

Patterson’s presence in Dallas was a big key to Baldwin’s decision to transfer to TCU. Baldwin also appreciates the mindset of the players already suiting up for the Horned Frogs. In particular, he likes the way the current roster likes to “play for each other and win games.”

It’s safe to assume that Patterson isn’t using a scholarship on a transfer that he doesn’t believe can win a starting spot on his team. Nothing is guaranteed for Baldwin, but he should get every opportunity to battle for the starting quarterback job in the preseason.

That doesn’t appear to be something that was going to materialize for him at Ohio State. It would be a major surprise if the Buckeyes start the campaign with anyone other than Fields leading their offense.

This edition of the transfer carousel will cost Ohio State some depth at the quarterback position, but it might get TCU a signal caller capable of getting them back into the national title picture.
