The pressure on Maurizio Sarri has perhaps decreased a little since the first leg of this tie, with Chelsea having qualified for next season’s Champions League after their 3-0 win over Watford on Sunday.
Frankfurt coach Adi Huetter elected to omit key players such as Mijat Gacinovic and Luka Jovic from his starting XI against Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend but ended up paying the price, as his side succumbed to a 6-1 thrashing.
Although Frankfurt remain in fourth place in the Bundesliga and are therefore still on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League by virtue of their domestic league position, Leverkusen are now level on points with two games left to play.
And given that (i) Frankfurt’s last Bundesliga game of the season is away to Bayern Munich; (ii) winning the Europa League also brings with it qualification for the Champions League, it would seem that Frankfurt have even more incentive to progress here than their opponents do.
