MLB rumors: 5 players Red Sox needs to trade for
1. Zack Wheeler, RHP New York Mets
Boston’s starters have been bad this year. You’d expect Sale to come back around, and Price has actually pitched well, but Porcello has been knocked around quite a bit to begin the season. Eduardo Rodriguez has been stable, but they need another sure-handed starter.
Eovaldi is on the shelf, and the team just cracked open the safe to ink him as a free agent last offseason. Meaning, they need rotational depth and a true number two or three arm. Enter Zack Wheeler.
Wheeler probably profiles higher than a three starter, but his inability to avoid big innings is why he is perceived to be a mid-rotation arm. However, when he is on, he has the stuff to dominate as a front-line starter.
No doubt about it, Wheeler would cost Dombrowski a lot. Trading for him would probably cost high-end prospects. It depends on if the Sox are content after winning last year or not. Also, Wheeler would make a lot of sense for the future.
Why? Porcello is coming off the books after this season and he will enter free agency. Wheeler is also set to enter the open market, but the team could trade for him and re-sign him this offseason to take Porcello’s spot.
Of course, that’s a lot of money being dumped into the rotation, and the team has to prepare to pay their MVP outfielder Mookie Betts. Wheeler would solidify the rotation not only for this season, but possibly years to come.
