WWE Money in the Bank 2019: United States Championship match preview

The United States Title is on the line when Rey Mysterio challenges Samoa Joe at Money in the Bank, and things are starting to get personal.

In his 30 years as a professional wrestler, Rey Mysterio has won every title in the WWE except for the United States Championship. If he’s successful at Money in the Bank on May 19 in Hartford he will join the ranks of the prestigious Grand Slam Champion club. In order for that to happen he has to get by Samoa Joe.

Throughout his career, Joe has been a destructive and impressive force. When Mysterio faced Joe at WrestleMania 35 the match lasted under a minute. To be fair, Mysterio came into the match with a knee injury that hampered his usual high-flying style. Since then he’s been looking for a measure of redemption for the quick loss. He obtained a non-title victory over Joe on an episode of Monday Night Raw and that’s where things started to get personal.

Remember Mysterio’s son Dominic? He was introduced years ago during a very peculiar angle where Eddie Guerrero claimed he was Dominic’s father and they had a ladder match with custody on the line. Dominic has returned to WWE television and he’s been inserted in the story with Joe and Mysterio.

In most of his matches Joe has a way of pushing the personal buttons of his opponents. We saw him go after AJ Styles’ family and he briefly targeted Jeff Hardy’s battle with addiction. So when Dominic showed up at his father’s side again recently, Joe was quick to drag him into the middle by confront him backstage.

All of this could be leading up to Dominic making an in-ring debut with WWE soon and getting involved in his father’s title match might be the start of it. He could help Mysterio to win the title or he could become a detriment at ringside with Joe using him to distract Mysterio. What we do know is this match is bound to go for longer than a minute and we’ll see some classic Mysterio in-ring artistry against the savage style of Joe. Look for this one to possibly be the opener.
