Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must look to the transfer market to turn his club’s fortunes around.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment as interim manager appeared to be the catalyst for change at Manchester United. The club legend’s arrival in December prompted a resurgence following the ill-fated spell of Jose Mourinho and saw United enjoy a run of 14 wins in 19 matches.

He was soon handed a permanent role at Old Trafford which sparked a dramatic decline in form. United won only two of their last 10 matches to end the season in a disappointing sixth position. Solskjaer was quick to call out his underperforming stars, raising suspicions that there could be a massive overhaul at the club in the summer. If that is indeed the case, we think we know which players they should sign.

Peter Gulacsi

Since his arrival at Old Trafford in 2011, no player has had a greater impact for Manchester United than David de Gea. The 28-year-old goalkeeper has been the standout player over the last eight seasons where his performances have near-singlehandedly kept the club from slipping to a mid-table position.

The Spaniard’s form, although seemingly waning this season, has inevitably seen him courted by a number of suitors, with Real Madrid perennially linked with a move for his signature. A return home finally seems to be on the cards for De Gea after he reportedly rejected a new contract with United, leaving just one year remaining on his current deal.

If the record four-time club Player of the Season does depart, Solskjaer will have a challenging task on his hands to fill the massive void in goal. There are few players who can match the former Atletico Madrid stopper’s ability but a potentially suitable replacement is RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi.

The Hungarian international has arguably been the most consistent goalkeeper in the Bundesliga over the last three seasons and ended the current campaign with at least three more clean sheets than any other keeper. The 29-year-old ranked among the best in the league across the various goalkeeping statistics and his form in goal this season was instrumental in the club retaining their Champions League spot.

He did previously have a stint in the reserve side of Liverpool but his affiliation to the club’s rivals should bear little consideration. In fact, his past with the Reds would benefit United as he qualifies as a home-grown player. Gulacsi might not be a big-name player but he ticks all of the boxes in terms of quality and experiences.
