We finally know more about Hideo Kojima’s latest video game offering, and Death Stranding sounds absolutely bonkers.

Whenever a video game meshes together with arthouse cinema, it’s hard to not think of Hideo Kojima.

One of the most renowned video game designers of all-time, Kojima took the storytelling element of gaming and added avant-garde elements that completely — well, changed the game.

Now Kojima is back and we finally know more about the long-awaited Death Stranding. We still don’t know a whole lot about the plot of the game or the finer details of what it’s going to be about, but information is starting to trickle out.

A new trailer and the official release date for Death Stranding were unleashed on Wednesday, and we’re all still trying t process just exactly what is happening.

Here’s The Trailer:

Also, The Cast:

Kojima is calling in all his favors on this one, flexing how packed his Rolodex is in the process. If there’s a famous artsy actor or director out there, they’re making an appearance in Death Stranding. Here’s an incomplete but absolutely robust list of the creative minds joining Kojima on this journey:

  • Norman Reedus
  • Guillermo del Toro
  • Lindsay Wagner
  • Troy Baker
  • Margaret Qualley
  • Mads Mikkelsen
  • Léa Seydoux
  • Tommie Earl Jenkins
  • Nicolas Winding Refn

Wait, So What The Hell Is It About?

That’s still a very good question. We’ve all, at this point, watched two trailers and actual gameplay but still don’t have a good idea what this game is going to be about.

Kojima has hinted at the plot in the past, stating that it’s going to draw on real-world issues to power the story. But it’s not limited to a tale of this world and seems to be less interested in being a commentary on a Trumpian world and more about how we maybe got to where we are now.

“There’s so many things happening in the real world, America and Europe, everything is actually connected by Internet. I’m kind of putting that metaphor in the game,” he said at E3 this year.

The gaming legend added more to that on Wednesday, furthering the theme of ‘connection’ being central to what he describes as an entirely new style of action game.

"“Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the ‘Strand’ or connection.”"

When Does It Come Out?

Pre-orders are open now, which is why the game is trending worldwide and being talked about so much. You’ll also get some bonuses material if you pre-order the game ahead of its November 8th release date.

Kojima is like the Kubrick of video gaming, where he doesn’t do a lot but when he does it’s an Event. It’s his first game since 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and the first non-Metal Gear game he’s had full control over since 1994’s Policenauts.

November 8th is the official release date for Death Stranding so until then we can try and unpack and digest just what the hell this game is going to be about and do to us.
