2. New York Yankees

The walking wounded New York Yankees have propelled themselves back to the top of the AL East on the strength of a 17-8 record so far in the month of May. With 15 players, including Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Dellin Betances, James Paxton, Luis Severino, CC Sabathia and Didi Gregorious, on the shelf, the Yankees have somehow found a way to win with a skeleton crew. The team’s starting rotation has been hit especially hard, with huge offseason acquisition Paxton only making seven starts and Severino out until at least the end of July.

The Yankees actually do have room to operate below the luxury-tax threshold, and can afford to sign Dallas Keuchel if they see fit. Their starting rotation could completely unravel at a moment’s notice, with no guarantees that Severino will be back this year, Paxton and Sabathia with a long history of injuries and J.A. Happ struggling so far this year. Domingo German has been a bright spot, but entered the year with only 100 MLB innings under his belt.

Keuchel could be the workhorse arm the Yankees need to hold things together in the rotation for the rest of the season and into the playoffs. Adding a starter at midseason has turned into an annual tradition, but the Yankees have only gotten very mixed results from the likes of Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn and Happ. Keuchel could be a rental or signed to a slightly longer deal.

Yankee Stadium is extremely hitter friendly, but Keuchel has a strong track record pitching at Minute Maid Park and also has a 2.45 ERA in five starts in the Bronx. If the Yankees are still dealing with injuries to Paxton and Sabathia after the draft, look for them to make a strong push to sign Keuchel.
