Only three players in NFL history have thrown at least 50 touchdown passes in a single season. The first was ageless New England Patriots’ signal-caller Tom Brady, who set the league mark with that exact figure in 2007 – his eighth season in the NFL. Six years later, prolific passer Peyton Manning surpassed that total (55) with the Denver Broncos. It was the veteran’s 15th professional campaign and it was also a season in which he set a new league record for passing yards in a season (5,477). This pair of seasoned pros made it look easy in their respective performances.
Which makes what 23-year-old Patrick Mahomes did in 2018 somewhat amazing. In his second season in the league and with just one NFL start under his belt entering this past year, opposing defenses struggled to keep up with his impressive arm strength and his overall skills. It will be interesting to see how teams adjust this offseason.
As far as 2018, the former Texas Tech standout hit on 66 percent of his throws for 5,097 yards and more than four times as many TD passes (50) as interceptions. He also finished second on the team with 272 yards and two scores on the ground. There were nine fumbles, two of those which wound up in the other team’s possession. But Mahomes earned NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors. And who knows what the future may hold for this talented youngster?
