1. Tyus Jones

Jones is a restricted free agent, so the Minnesota Timberwolves will be able to match any offer he receives. But they are not in a position to match a big offer to the Duke product and keep him as their backup point guard for one more year before he could then step in and replace Jeff Teague as the starter. The Suns could swoop in early in free agency and make an offer that it’s just not palatable for Minnesota to even think about matching.

Jones has only started 34 of his 247 NBA games, including 23 this past season. But advanced metrics have been kind to him, he is not reckless with the ball (0.7 turnovers per game this season, and for his career) and his per-36 minute numbers were pretty good this season (10.8 points, 7.5 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals) and in 2017-18 (10.2 points, 5.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 steals).

Jones would address the Suns’ seemingly endless need for a capable point guard while teaming with Devin Booker to form an enviable young backcourt and taking some play-making responsibilities off the team’s centerpiece star. The big question is cost, but Phoenix should be among the teams willing to tender Jones an offer.
