College football recruiting has never been crazier with the advent of the transfer portal and USC football is taking advantage in a big way.

Miami was a big winner of the transfer portal earlier this year and now it’s USC football who is using it to get a much-needed infusion of talent in June.

After initially enrolling at USC, five-star receiver, Bru McCoy ended up transferring to Texas where he played spring football and was in line to be eligible this year. But his time in Austin didn’t last long as he reportedly is heading back to play for the Trojans.

McCoy took a visit to USC on Monday and he wasn’t alone. One-time USC commit, former Florida signee and currently committed to Oregon, Chris Steele also visited USC on Monday. The Trojans could pull off a double-dip during a time when it’s normally quiet on the recruiting trail for incoming freshmen.

All the hoopla is typically reserved for the early Signing Day in late December and the late (traditional) Signing Day in early February, but the advent of the transfer portal has changed college football recruiting forever.

USC is taking advantage of this brave new world.

While Steele’s decision is not final, it looks like he could end up with the Trojans after all. That would give Clay Helton a second win this offseason and some needed momentum entering a season where he’s firmly on the hot seat.

Helton and USC are also keeping their own guys from leaving through the transfer portal.

Wide receiver Velus Jones entered the transfer portal in March but after exploring his options, he’s decided to stay at USC. Jones should add valuable depth to the wide receiver unit and compete for reps behind starters Michael Pittman Jr., Tyler Vaughns and Amon-ra St. Brown.

Skeptics will point to USC needing to get these June additions to supplement the roster as a sign of how far recruiting has fallen off in recent years. No matter how they got here, they have taken advantage of the situation and added Jones, McCoy and Steele could be the next to join USC.
