Tier 4

T.J. Hockenson, Lions

Noah Fant, Broncos

Eric Ebron, Colts

Jared Cook, Saints

This is the highest I’ve had a rookie tight end ranked in a few years, and I have two in this tier. It is risky, as often rookie tight ends do not produce. However, both of these Iowa tight ends — T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant — seem to be pro-ready, and should take over immediately as their team’s first option at the position. This fourth tier is full of high-variance players, who could pop and be top-five scorers at the position or who could fizzle and let your team down.

Tier 5

Chris Herndon, Jets

Austin Hooper, Falcons

Vance McDonald, Steelers

Trey Burton, Bears

Delanie Walker, Titans

This is the tier where it feels like the talent has dropped off fast. If you miss one of the players in the top four tiers, it can quickly feel like you are going to be hurting at the position all year. However, each of these players has intriguing upside. For Austin Hooper, Vance McDonald and Trey Burton, they are in good offenses and have shown big potential to produce. For Chris Herndon, he could pop if the Jets offense as a whole gets better, starting with the quarterback. And for Delanie Walker, if he is still a primary weapon in the offense upon his return from injury, the targets alone make him intriguing. But it’s certainly a shaky tier.

Tier 6

Ian Thomas, Panthers

Mark Andrews, Ravens

Dallas Goedert, Eagles

Mike Gesicki, Dolphins

Jimmy Graham, Packers

Except for Jimmy Graham, all of these players are talented and young, with big potential. To this point, they have barely showed glimpses. But if the chips fall the correct way, each could find himself with a decent number of targets and could become very fantasy-relevant. For Graham, he has certainly lost a step. But he is still in an elite offense, and could be a touchdown machine if the Packers figure out how to use him.
