Christiane Endler just might be the best goalkeeper in the entire world, and the PSG star showed her quality with an insane save in Chile’s first ever World Cup game.

Chile knew that they would be tested by one of the best teams in the world in their first ever Women’s World Cup game, as Sweden boast a talented attack and have experience excelling on a big stage in the Olympics. But with arguably the best goalkeeper in the world in captain Christiane Endler, Chile had confidence that they could pull off the upset.

It didn’t take Endler long to make a profound impact against Sweden, showing the whole world why she was named the best goalkeeper in the best league in the world. The PSG star couldn’t have even seen the ball until the very last second, as it came off of a Sweden player’s shoulder and started rolling toward Endler’s left.

Not only did Endler somehow react in time, showing why she might have the best reflexes in world football, but the 27-year-old also somehow had the power in her wrist to deflect the ball sufficiently far from her goal to clear the danger. Endler only had a split second to react, but she clearly got to the ball before it even touched the goal line.

Less than 15 minutes later, Endler was called into action again. A lovely cross from the left nearly met a rushing Stina Blackstenius. Though Endler didn’t get a hand to this one, her quick thinking prevented Blackstenius from having enough of an angle to get a crisp strike on the ball.

Endler’s distribution and command of the box will continue to be counted on during this tournament, as Chile will have to ward off talented attacks in Group F. Sweden had the brunt of the possession in the first half of Chile’s first ever World Cup game, but Endler ensured that her side would head into the half with a 0-0 tie intact. This included making a critical punch to ward off a dangerous corner with just seconds left of stoppage time in the first 45 minutes.

Half-German and Half-Chilean, the trilingual Endler’s height, reflexes, and leadership make her one of the very best in the world. She’s been compared to several elite goalkeepers from Germany, so it comes as no surprise that she grew up idolizing German legend Oliver Kahn. Endler is well on her way to becoming an icon on the international stage with saves like this one, as she’s already firmly established as an elite player at the club level.
