Mats Hummels was a superstar at Borussia Dortmund before leaving to join rivals Bayern Munich, but it sounds like the door is open for a reunion between Hummels and BVB this summer.

Bayern Munich are attempting to get younger across the board, as this will be a summer of change in Bavaria. Although Bayern won the domestic double after dispatching RB Leipzig with ease in the DFB-Pokal Final, the club has clear Champions League title aspirations and realize they need a strong youth movement to get there.

Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, and Rafinha are already gone, and center back Jerome Boateng could join them. Meanwhile, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard are joining the team on defense, and Bayern are eyeing a number of world-class attackers, such as Callum Hudson-Odoi, Leroy Sane, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Nicolas Pepe.

However, another veteran standout could be leaving Bayern this summer. Sport Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund have interest in acquiring former star Mats Hummels, who broke the BVB faithful’s hearts in 2016 when he left Dortmund for Bayern.

According to Bavarian Football Works’s John Dillon, Dortmund and Bayern have engaged in “concrete talks” following BVB notifying the Bundesliga champions of their interest. Since Hummels’s contract runs out at the end of the 2020 season, he could be an affordable option for Dortmund at around 20 million euros.

Dortmund have also reportedly shown interest in veteran Arsenal center back Laurent Koscielny. They have a number of impressive young center backs in Manuel Akanji, Dan-Axel Zagadou, and the versatile Abdou Diallo, but adding a veteran presence would be wise.

Although Koscielny is a solid player, Hummels would be a huge catch for Dortmund. The BVB fans welcomed Mario Gotze back with open arms after he left for Bayern, and Gotze is back to being a key player for Dortmund.

At 30, Hummels is nearing the end of his prime, but he remains a highly effective player and one of the Bundesliga’s top center backs. Therefore, it’s difficult to see Bayern selling him, since they run the risk of losing depth at the position. They spent so much on Pavard and Hernandez because of their desire to add quality depth, and while Hummels is aging, it may be difficult for Bayern to replace him at this stage. Unless, of course, they plan on stealing away a few more key players in Germany, such as another star Stuttgart defender in the in-demand Ozan Kabak, who was the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year.

The fact that Dortmund and Bayern are reportedly in talks for Hummels is huge news for Dortmund fans, because he’d be a big addition to their squad. It’d be a heart-warming reunion, and it could potentially hurt Bayern in the short-term, making it an intriguing situation to monitor.
