Chile goalkeeper Christiane Endler has been one of the stars of the tournament, and she added another jaw-dropping save to her running tally by robbing Lindsey Horan with her legs.

Christiane Endler announced herself to the world on the international stage by making five saves against Sweden in Chile’s first Women’s World Cup game.

The majority of those saves were of the world-class variety, and she is the reason it took Sweden, one of the World Cup favorites, 83 minutes to find the back of the net. This save from a corner was the best of the bunch.

Although it only took the USWNT 11 minutes to score against Chile, Endler played a huge role in helping her team avoid a similar blowout loss as Thailand. Endler, per usual, commanded her box with authority and made some more big saves, including this absolute stunner to deny NWSL Player of the Year Lindsey Horan.

Surely, Horan thought a 4-0 lead was in the bag in the 55th minute, but Endler had other ideas. Horan ran across the middle of the penalty box unmarked, and left forward Christen Press pulled it back for the midfielder perfectly. Horan squared up for her second goal this tournament, but Endler somehow got her left foot across in time to deny Horan.

Just 10 minutes later, Endler did it again with an equally world-class save to deny Press, who would have been the assist-giver for Horan’s strike, a goal. It is difficult to fathom how on earth Endler got across the goal in order to deny Press here, and Endler’s reach and instincts are special. This is one of the best saves you’ll ever see, and Endler has made a habit of making astounding stops.

The USWNT’s vaunted attack had given Chile’s defense problems all game long, scoring three first-half goals, including two from Carli Lloyd. They were particularly strong on Tierna Davidson’s corners, but they found it difficult to add to their tally thanks to Endler’s keeping. Press was denied three times by Endler, who was impervious in the air and at her near post when facing the USWNT left forward.

Endler, who grew up looking up to legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, plays her club football at PSG. She is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world today, and these performances against Sweden and the United States have shown that she should be regarded as the standard-setter at the position. This was a top-drawer save, and there will be many more to come from Chile’s superstar captain.
