5 burning questions the Cowboys must answer in 2019
2. Just how good is Dak Prescott?
There’s no question that Prescott is a good quarterback. Similarly, there can be no debate that he deserves to be the Cowboys starter. The applicable questions begin when neutral observers wonder whether or not he’s good enough to carry this team to a Super Bowl title.
That has roster and financial implications for Dallas. It’s no secret that Prescott wants a contract extension from the team sooner, rather than later. It’s very possible those negotiations will stretch into the regular season. If they do, every game Prescott plays could cause his price tag to fluctuate.
With that being said, the chances of Prescott leaving the Cowboys are practically zero. They’re going to re-sign him eventually. That doesn’t necessarily answer the question of whether or not he can elevate the players around him though.
Proponents of the former Mississippi State star will point to how well he played down the stretch of the 2018 season. He certainly did play well during that stretch of time, but he also benefited greatly from the acquisition of Cooper and the presence of Elliott in his backfield.
The likely truth is that Prescott’s status as a quarterback lies somewhere between above-average starter and borderline star. It’s still up in the air exactly where in that range he falls. His play this season will provide valuable data for the Cowboys in their quest to answer that question.
