2019 Travelers Championship: DraftKings DFS Picks

Welcome Fantasy Golfers, for the Travelers Championship DraftKings picks. After a few weeks off, I am back! This week the PGA Tour travels to Cromwell, Connecticut. The week following the US Open has actually drawn a fairly strong field. Some key stats that I’ll be looking at this week for TPC River Highlands include the following:

Strokes Gained: Tee to Green

Ball Striking

Par 4 Birdie or Better

This is a shorter course that stretches just over 6,800 yards compared to last week, where Pebble Beach played over 7,000 yards.

Last year’s champion, Bubba Watson, is back again to defend his title. Bubba came into the Travelers Championship last year off of a missed cut at the US Open the week before. When comparing the two leaderboards from 2018, there are not many players who had success at both the US Open, and Travelers Championship. In fact, not a single golfer finished inside the top-15 in both events. Taking the leaderboards top-10 golfers at the Travelers Championship, just six of the ten actually made the cut at the US Open the week before with T16 being the highest finish.

That being said, it has proven to be difficult playing at the Travelers Championship if one was in contention at the US Open. This can be treated the same as all other events following a major. Not trying to completely pull you off of guys like Brooks Koepka, Louis Oosthuizen, Chez Reavie, and Chesson Hadley, but it is good to keep in mind when constructing your team.

Justin Thomas $9,800

It’s probably safe to assume that anyone who has owned Justin Thomas recently will be hesitant to roster him. Dating all the way back to the end of 2017, Thomas had a streak with just one missed cut in 42 events. As of late, he has uncharacteristically missed two of his last three at both the Memorial, and this past week at the US Open. His ownership should be down due to this recent form, even being priced at a discount.

When looking at the key stats, Thomas is the only golfer who ranks inside the field’s top five in all three categories. He is second in both SG: Tee to Green, and Par 4 Birdie or Better. His history at the Travelers Championship is not as consistent as one would like to see, but he did flash back in 2017 where he finished in a tie for third. Look for Thomas to get back on track this week at TPC River Highlands.

Tony Finau $9,000

It’s been over two years now since Tony Finau missed back to back cuts on the PGA Tour. This was back in the spring of 2017 where he bounced back off of them with a T3 at the Valero Texas Open. Finau has now broke that streak with missed cuts at both the Memorial, and the US Open, just like Justin Thomas. Now I don’t want to fill my team with players who are in bad form, but with elite players like Finau and Thomas, I am willing to roll the dice.

When looking at course history, Tony Finau is a top-25 machine at the Travelers Championship. He didn’t play the event last season, but he ripped off four straight finishes that were T25 or better from 2014-2017. The stats don’t line up as nice as I’d like them to, but he does rank 25th in the field when it comes to SG: Tee to Green. Starting your build with Thomas and Finau leaves you in a good spot with an average of $7,800 for each of your last four spots.

Alternate Options: Jason Day ($10,000), and Tommy Fleetwood ($9,300).

Jason Kokrak $8,300

We all expected Kokrak to cool down a little bit after his month-long heater of top-10’s, but he is still making cuts. After a week off, not playing in the US Open, Kokrak looks to keep his cut streak alive at the Travelers Championship. He has made the cut here in four of his last five tries, with his two most recent finishes coming inside the top-35.

Like Thomas, Kokrak is another golfer who ranks inside the field’s top-10 in all three of the key stats. He is ninth across the board and inside the PGA Tour’s top-25 in them as well. He hasn’t had a top-10 finish in over two months now, so look for Kokrak to snap back into form this week at the Travelers Championship.

Keegan Bradley $7,700

In terms of course history, and key stats, Keegan Bradley caught my eye this week. In his history at the Travelers Championship, Bradley has made eight straight cuts with a top-10, and three top-25’s. This consistency of eight straight has me on board. At the price of just $7,700, Bradley fits nicely in with the Thomas/Finau build.

When looking through the key stats, Bradley shows up inside the fields top-10 in both SG: Tee to Green, and Ball Striking. He actually is top-20 on the PGA Tour in both of these categories as well. Like we’ve talked about earlier, Bradley is another player who missed the cut a week ago at the US Open. I’m in.

Alternate Options: Kevin Streelman ($8,200), Emiliano Grillo ($7,900), Sungjae Im ($7,800), and Lucas Glover ($7,500).

Beau Hossler $7,200

Down in the low-$7,000 range, Hossler makes for an intriguing play. Prior to his missed cut at the Memorial, Hossler was rounding back into form with four consecutive made cuts. Even though he hasn’t been playing his best golf this season, he still ranks inside the field’s top-25 in Par 4 Birdie or Better. Hossler finished in a tie for second here last year and is 2/2 at TPC River Highlands.

Troy Merritt $7,100

Since returning from injury, Merritt has surprisingly been playing very well. He has top-20 finishes in two of his last four starts, which includes a top-10 at the RBC Heritage. Merritt shows up on all three of the key stats, as he ranks eighth in the field in Ball Striking, 15th in Par 4 Birdie or Better, and 23rd in SG: Tee to Green. He has inconsistent course history, but did finish T8 at the Travelers Championship in 2017.

Cameron Champ $6,800

As much as I never want to play him again, I also don’t want to miss out. Ever since his fall finish, Cameron Champ has been an absolute mess. He went on a stretch early in the year missing five straight cuts, but has begun to turn his season around, making two of the last three. A lot of his stats show up because of his play in the fall, but he still ranks inside the fields top-25 in both Ball Striking, and Par 4 Birdie or Better. He is a risk, don’t get me wrong, but I’m willing to give him a try at just $6,800.
