Scotland had a 3-0 lead heading into the 74th minute, but a flurry of late goals from Argentina, led by Florencia Bonsegundo, kept their own tournament hopes alive and ended Scotland’s in controversial fashion.

Among the tournament underdogs, Argentina have a chance at making it into the knockout stages after a ridiculous comeback against Scotland in the final Group D game. However, praise goes to Florencia Bonsegundo, who played a critical role in Argentina’s shocking 3-3 tie.

Scotland had dominated Argentina for 74 minutes of play and things looked bleak for Argentina, who had yet to score a single goal in the Women’s World Cup. They previously remained competitive due to strong defense and Vanina Correa’s excellence in goal.

However, Argentina came back in inspiring fashion, and received a lifeline from VAR in stoppage time.

Bonsegundo gave her team a lifeline with a wonderful strike from outside the box and while the goal was scored as an own goal by Scotland, Bonsegundo’s powerful right foot allowed Argentina to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Few things are more satisfying than watching the ball smack the underside of the crossbar for a goal and Bonsegundo’s celebration says it all.

But even that wonderful strike paled in comparison to the impact of her penalty. After VAR ruled that Scotland’s keeper stepped off the line, Bonsegundo had a lifeline after missing her first.

She made absolutely no mistake with her second attempt, nailing the penalty down the middle to leave Scotland stunned in the 94th minute.

Oh, and check out the absolute power behind her celebration.

Scotland have every right to be upset with how they lost, but they did blow a 3-0 lead to a team that previously had issues scoring. All the credit should go to Argentina and Bonsengundo will go down as a hero for her country after this gutsy performance.

Argentina can still make it into the knockout stages, too. They only had two points in group play, but they could advance depending on what happens in the Cameroon vs. New Zealand and Chile vs. Thailand games on Thursday afternoon.
