Buffalo Bills: J.P. Losman
The Buffalo Bills traded back into the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft to select J.P. Losman, an undersized, but talented quarterback from Tulane. With the pick, Losman became the first quarterback selected in the first round by the Bills since Jim Kelly in the historic 1983 NFL Draft, but he did not have quite the career as Kelly did.
After breaking his leg in a freak accident during his rookie year, Losman saw limited action, but eventually he would take over as the starter in Buffalo. In fact, he played so well in 2006 that the team actually thought he would turn into a legitimate franchise quarterback, as he completed a team-record 62.5 percent of his passes.
In 2007, the Bills spent an early round draft pick on Trent Edwards, and when Losman was hurt again, Edwards stepped in as a the starter. Edwards would eventually be the reason Losman was shown the door in Buffalo, as when his contract ended in 2008, the team decided to move in another direction.
For Losman, he showed flashes of potential during his time in the NFL, but was a guy who did not live up to his billing as a first rounder. The Bills struggled to get a solid starter at quarterback for years after Losman, and the hope is that their latest first rounder, Josh Allen, is the real heir to the Kelly throne in Buffalo.
