Who are the Lucha Bros: An All Elite Wrestling primer
By J.D. Oliva
Dangerous, exciting, unpredictable: The Lucha Brothers have wrecked their way across the independent wrestling scene and are setting their sights on AEW.
“Ciero Miedo” is the war cry of Pentagon Jr. (also known as Pentagon Dark and Penta 0M), one half of the most exciting tag team in pro wrestling. Along with his brother, Fenix, Los Lucha Brothers have exploded from south of the Rio Grande to take the tag team landscape in All Elite Wrestling by storm.
Little is known about the real-life brothers before they made their US debuts in Lucha Underground. The duo, who began teaming in 2017, have won gold across the globe, claiming tag team titles in IMPACT, MLW, the Crash and AAW.
This past spring, the current AAA Tag Team Champions were challenged by Matt and Nick Jackson, the Young Bucks, to see who was really the greatest tag team in the business. Pentagon and Fenix showed up at the AEW Double or Nothing press conference in Las Vegas to accept the Bucks’ challenge. Fenix answered with a superkick and Pentagon left Matt Jackson laying with his patented package piledriver on the stage.
The feud between the brother-and-brother teams intensified when the Bucks travel to Mexico, taking the AAA titles to set up a rematch at Double or Nothing, with the Bucks coming out on top. The luchadors finally recaptured the AAA tag team championship in their home country at AAA’s Verano de Escándalo on June 17.
As single competitors, the two brothers are just as accomplished. Pentagon played one of the central villains in Lucha Underground, known for this brutal matches with Vampiro and Prince Puma (WWE’s Ricochet). While in the Temple, Penta won the LU Championship before traveling to IMPACT Wrestling to win their World Heavyweight Championship.
Fenix, who’s been compared to Rey Mysterio, is one of the game’s most awe-inspiring high-flyers and is the current holder of the AAA Mega Championship. He also teamed with Mysterio and Bandido to face the Bucks and Kota Ibushi in the main event of last year’s All In pay-per-view.
What impact the Lucha Bros. will have on the burgeoning AEW tag team is one of the big questions heading into AEW’s fall premiere on TNT. The feud between the two sets of brothers continues as the Bucks join their Elite teammate, Kenny Omega, to face Penta, Fenix and the Laredo Kid at AEW Fyter Fest on Saturday, June 29. That show will stream free on the B/R Live app.
