3. Los Angeles Clippers

The Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, but the Clippers head into the summer with a lot of financial flexibility. They have an opportunity to sign two max free agents this year. Steve Ballmer would love to ink Durant and the teammate of his choice.

In a perfect world, they’d love to sign Kawhi Leonard and Durant. Having two of the best two-way wings in the NBA would transform the Clippers’ young corps into instant title contenders. Yes, they’d have to wait a year for Durant to get healthy, but Leonard could lead this team on a meaningful playoff run in the meantime.

The problem with the Clippers is they aren’t blessed with terrific talent at the moment either. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Landry Shamet have the makings of a quality back court of the future. Lou Williams is a terrific player right now, but he is closer to the decline of his career than many Clippers fans would like to admit.

The real problem with the Clippers strategy is that they’ll struggle to lure Leonard or Kyrie Irving to join Durant in the City of Angels. Without the benefit of having another superstar in the mix, Los Angeles is going to stay on the fringes of the race to sign KD.
