Trevor Lawrence will have a return to earth season at Clemson

Before you Clemson fans start scouring the internet for my home address in order to ship stink-bombs my way, let me clear something up. I’m not saying Trevor Lawrence won’t have a nice season or that Clemson won’t probably be in the College Football Playoff again.

What I am saying is that the Tigers will need to do it without having to rely on Trevor Lawrence to get it done — every. single. week. The young second-year quarterback will find that “sophomore slump” can be a very real thing.

Lawrence arrived in a big way at Clemson last season and nobody was really sure just how good this kid would be against some tough college competition. He rose to the challenge and helped lead the Tigers to their second national championship in three years.

No small feat for a true freshman quarterback.

But this year, teams will be ready. Especially teams like Syracuse, Florida State, South Carolina, and non-conference toughie, Texas A&M. Those teams and every other Clemson opponent have film and a list of tendencies on Lawrence now, as well as a book on what he can and can’t do well. He’s not going to surprise anyone this season.

The situations where the Tigers might have looked to Lawrence to carry them (because let’s face it, it wouldn’t be Clemson if they didn’t have some mid-season stumbles and close calls) will need a new hero.

Clemson is still darn good, and so is Trevor Lawrence. But don’t look for another 30-touchdown, 4-interception season from the sophomore quarterback. The odds and a few opponents will catch up with him in 2019.
