DraftKings PGA: 2019 British Open Picks and Analysis

The John Deere Classic was awesome. You probably have never heard of half of the names in the field, but it was extremely entertaining watching them attack pins. The course was in beautiful shape and the scores were low. Dylan Frittelli got hot in the final round and rode exceptional driving and clutch putting to his first PGA Tour victory. Congratulations to him, and let’s welcome Dylan to the 2019 British Open, as he earned a spot into the field via his victory but now we move on to a major and some serious DraftKings PGA contests.

Congratulations, we have made it to the final major of the year, the British Open. The field is stacked with the best that the PGA and European Tour have to offer. Hosting the event is a course that has not seen professional golf since 2012, when Jamie Donaldson fended off Raphael Cabrera Bello for the Irish Open championship. Donaldson shot 18 under at that rendition of Royal Portrush. This edition will play slightly longer, the rough will be healthier, and the greens faster. I am fully prepared for Royal Portrush to be a bear this year. Temperatures will hover between low-50’s to low-60 degree weather, the wind will be swirling, and the hazards will be penal.

Royal Portrush is playing at 7,337 yards and will play as a par-71. The fairways are large, but the separation between fairways and fescue is small. There will be drivable par-4’s and gettable par-5’s. British Open’s tend to play more on the firm side, so you can bet that the best players in the world are not concerned by the length of this course. My estimate is that the winner of this tournament posts an 8-under. I am factoring in difficult conditions. If the weather/wind is benign, then we could see a number approaching that 18-under from 2012. However, understand that this course will be miles more difficult than the 2012 edition. The Open has brought about major changes to this course, and you will see its teeth for most of the week.
