It took almost 30 years to bring the Women’s Tag Team titles back to WWE. In less than three months they’ve already faded into the background. Here’s how to make the WWE Women’s Tag titles relevant again.

Back in December 2018, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon officially announced Women’s Tag Team titles would be coming. The following month Alexa Bliss revealed the titles on “A Moment of Bliss” with the inaugural champions to be crowned at Elimination Chamber.

Six teams competed for the gold in an impressive chamber match and the Boss n’ Hug Connection of Sasha Banks and Bayley walked out the first-ever WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. It was supposed to be the dawn of a new era in women’s tag team wrestling. The RAW team of Boss n’ Hug stated they were going to defend their titles on all brands from SmackDown Live to NXT and even NXT UK. They defended the titles twice and then everything went to seed.

The IIconics pulled an upset at WrestleMania 35 defeating not only Boss n’ Hug Connection, but also the formidable duo of Nia Jax and Tamina, and the team of Natalya and a returning Beth Phoenix, the Divas of Doom. Immediately after the event Banks took a hiatus, Phoenix became a full-time commentator for NXT and The IIconics made jokes and wrestled jobbers. The Women’s Tag Team titles got lost in the shuffle.

According to an episode of The Bella Twins podcast the plan had originally been for The Bellas to come back and face the IIconics for the Women’s Tag Team Championships. But due to Nikki’s health issues, and subsequent retirement, those plans had to be scrapped. This left things up in the air on who would be The IIconics challengers. But it’s been that way for months with little sign of improvement. Even Paige’s announcement that she’d be returning to manage the Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane) to challenge The IIconics fizzled fast.

It just seems like there isn’t much effort being put behind the WWE Women’s Tag division at all. But with competitors like AEW and WOW both announcing their own Women’s Tag Team Championships would be coming, the WWE would be wise to start backing their own. Here’s a few ways they could get some needed momentum back.
