Notoriously deemed as the thinnest position in fantasy football, the tight end position is something people dread navigating through year in and year out. There are the obvious targets and then the “now what?” option. What route are you going to go?

The tight end position in fantasy football, while typically thought of as a streaming spot or a dead spot on a roster, can actually be an extremely pivotal piece to your lineup.

Typically, there are the top-end Fantasy Football options just like any position, only a much thinner selection of top-end options, in this case, three:

If you want to secure yourself a top-tier tight end, it will cost you an early to mid-round selection. Is the security of locking down consistency at the thinnest position in fantasy football worth the cost? What if you choose to forego spending an early pick on one of the above players?

Often times, these are two questions that fantasy football players are facing during their draft and frankly, is one that I don’t feel is thought about enough during the pre-draft preparation process.

I’ve fallen victim to this strategy before myself, but it seems rather common to go in with a “well its Travis Kelce or bust” mentality, where if you don’t snag Kelce or one of the premier options, you will resort to streaming the position.

While streaming isn’t the worst option in the world, there are a handful of tight ends heading into the 2019 season that are in a position to outperform their current ADPs and prove to save you an early-round pick, while producing at a higher-than-expected level.

So, if you feel like you would rather spend an early-round pick to add depth to other spots on your roster, what tight ends have the potential to be viable alternatives to the top dogs? Let’s find out.
