Manchester United vs. Leicester City

It was the opening weekend of last season that Manchester United and Leicester City played a thrilling match. An end-to-end contest, the game set the tone for the type of season the Premier League would be.

Manchester United won the game 2-1. After the game, manager Jose Mourinho lauded midfielder Paul Pogba after the Frenchman, who was not even expected to start after winning the World Cup a month earlier, scored the first goal on a penalty kick. Defender Luke Shaw scored his first Premier League goal of his career seven minutes from the end after controlling Juan Mata’s pass for the game winner against the surprise 2016 league champions.

“Winning the World Cup is in the past. I like challenges, I want to progress and win more trophies,” Pogba told the BBC.

The trophies never came. Instead, Man United’s season was fraught with trouble. Mourinho was eventually sacked. This season, the English giants are managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjae, who replaced Mourinho midway through last season. The former Manchester United star saw some success in the second half of the season. The hope is that this year can include a title run.

The September 14 game at Old Trafford has some extra spice to it. Not only was last season’s first meeting between the two so wonderful, but the recent sale of Leicester’s Harry Maguire to Manchester United means the England defender will face his former club this year.
