1. San Diego Padres

If we’re talking loaded farm systems to get Boston’s attention if or when offers come in for Betts, the Padres stand above the rest. Fernando Tatis Jr., Francisco Mejia, Chris Paddack, Josh Naylor and Cal Quantrill have all seen time in the big leagues this year, and San Diego still has six top-100 prospects of their own and they added a seventh near the deadline with the addition of outfielder Taylor Trammell via the three-team deal that sent Trevor Bauer to the Reds and Yasiel Puig to the Indians.

The contracts of first baseman Eric Hosmer and third baseman Manny Machado elevates the Padres’ future payrolls. But with that deep pipeline of young controllable talent they’re projected to pay $79 million to nearly a full-25 man contingent (21 players) in 2021. So there’s plenty of room to add some payroll, at least theoretically, or more specifically make another significant move or two in the coming offseasons.

Here’s a pretty robust offer the Padres could make.
