1989: Brain Busters vs. Hart Foundation

Tag team wrestling has not been a focus of this article, which brings us to SummerSlam 1988. Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, the Hart Foundation, had emerged as a premier tag team at the time, and were trying to get back in position for a shot at the tag team titles. A win over the champions would certainly put them in discussion for that.

The Brain Busters, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, held the championship going into this non-title match. But early in their match, it seems like the Hart Foundation looked more deserving of the titles. Everything that Anderson and Blanchard could throw at them, it was met with a counter or block.

If you’re a fan of technical wrestling, a lot of this match is definitely something to watch. Hart had things well in control, until all four men were brawling in the ring. After a double-team move onto Blanchard, it seemed like the champions were about to suffer a huge loss. But as Bobby Heenan was distracting the referee, Anderson hit Hart from the turnbuckle and helped Blanchard make the cover.

As was the norm, Heenan once again caused a distraction that worked out in his favor. But patience would pay off for the Hart Foundation. A year later in 1990, they would defeat Demolition for their second and final reign as tag team champions. The Brain Busters dropped the titles to Demolition a couple of months after this SummerSlam match, and would be out of the company by the end of the year.
