By Adam Stocker
Manchester United beat Chelsea 4-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, Aug. 11. Here are all the highlights from the match.
After a disappointing last season, Manchester United kicked off their Premier League season in impressive fashion, beating Chelsea 4-0.
The Blues got off to a strong start but after Kurt Zouma conceded a penalty, the game turned in United’s favor. Marcus Rashford stepped up to the spot and smashed home the penalty. United never looked back after their first goal, controlling the majority of the game and preventing Chelsea from creating many good scoring chances. In the second half, United looked to finish the game. The Red Devils scored twice in less than two minutes to seal their first victory of the season.
In their debut under new manager Frank Lampard, Chelsea showed flashes at times while on the attack, hitting the post twice in the first half, but struggled to defend. Center-back Kurt Zouma had a day to forget. The French international conceded a penalty in the first half and later picked up a yellow card following a second poorly-timed challenge. Lampard will be hoping that Antonio Rudiger will be able to make his season debut soon after missing the first game with an injury. American star Christian Pulisic made his Chelsea debut as a second-half substitute but could not kick start the Blues’ attack.
Highlights
Rashford opened the scoring from the penalty spot, following a Zouma foul inside of the box.
Anthony Martial banged home his first of the season, doubled the United lead partway through the second half.
Mere seconds later, Paul Pogba sent a beautiful ball over the top to Rashford who scored his second of the game. The goal sealed the victory for United.
With Chelsea pushing forward, United were able to counter with Pogba making a long run. The French midfielder found Daniel James inside of the box. In his United debut, James had his shot deflected by the Chelsea defender and into the goal.
In their second game of the season, United face Wolves, while Chelsea host Leicester. Wolves and Leicester faced each other in the opening weekend, with the game ending in a scoreless draw.
