Tour Championship 2019: 5 golfers outside top 5 that could win FedEx Cup
3. Lucas Glover (Starting at Even)
Lucas Glover needed a heroically good effort at the BMW Championship last week just to qualify for the 2019 Tour Championship and he came up with it. The 39-year old finished tied for seventh at Medinah to punch his ticket to Atlanta as the 29th-ranked player in the FedEx Cup standings. That also means he’s the longest shot on this list to potentially win at East Lake.
Starting the week 10 strokes behind Justin Thomas has to be daunting for anyone. At the same time, though, it could work to the advantage of a player in Glover’s position. Given his starting position in the new format, he has nothing to lose. He’s going to get a six-figure payday just for finishing, so why not be aggressive with every decision?
This is the fourth time that Glover has played in this event and he’s finished in the top 10 in two of his previous appearances. That bodes well for him, especially when you also consider how well that he’s played since the beginning of July. Since that time, the Clemson product has finished in the top 10 three times and also came in at tied for 20th at The Open.
Glover ranks 18th on the PGA Tour this season in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. His putting has not been elite this year by any stretch but, if he can continue his recent form and handle the greens this week, he has the juice to make a run and make things interesting at the Tour Championship.
