NFL Preseason Week 4: DFS Picks for Thursday, August 29th

Welcome to the 2019-2020 NFL season! Specifically, welcome to another cycle of NFL DFS as we enter the third week of the NFL Preseason and are exactly two weeks away from the real deal. Be sure to follow me @AlexMcKinnonDFS for daily & weekly DFS guidelines and up to the minute news and notes.

After last week’s ‘dress-rehearsal’, Week 4 will be the final test for NFL rookies and will be critically scrutinized for the final cuts on each roster. This is the conclusion of the ‘bubble’ competitions and will round out position groups for each team. This is also an opportunity for players to produce some decent film in the event they get cut and other teams may consider bringing them aboard. With that said, finding great DFS plays will be very tough outside of the QB position.

Read below to understand the top storylines and best DFS plays for Week 4 of the NFL Preseason. There are obvious position battles on defense and in the trenches but the following will just cover the skill positions.

Colts @ Bengals

Indianapolis Colts: You don’t need me to tell you the biggest story for the Colts and the NFL so far this season, Andrew Luck’s abrupt retirement. The question now becomes how far the Colts will fall from their presumed dark-horse super bowl contender status. With Jacoby Brissett taking over the helm and sitting out week 4, Chad Kelly should see a brunt of the action on Thursday.

A few key positions and ‘bubble’ battles are at RB (Aca’Cedric Ware/Marquis Young), TE (Hale Hentges/Ross Travis) and WR (Deon Cain, Zach Pascal, Marcus Johnson and Krishawn Hogan) with Cain being the most impressive thus far.

Cincinnati Bengals: With a handful of critical pieces looking doubtful for Week 1 including AJ Green, John Ross, Auden Tate and a number on the defensive side, the Bengals will tread lightly with 1st and 2nd stringers on Thursday.

Third-string QB Ryan Finely has been rather impressive in the preseason thus far and will likely carry a heavy portion of the load on Thursday. A pair of rookie running backs, Jordan Ellis and Rodney Anderson, have been successful so far this preseason and should continue to get some work heading into the final preseason week.

Players to use in DFS: Chad Kelly (QB-IND), Aca’Cedric Ware (RB-IND), Deon Cain (WR-IND), Ryan Finely (QB-CIN), Rodney Anderson (RB-CIN)

Eagles @ Jets

Philadelphia Eagles: With most Philadelphia fans distracted and salivating over the news that Jadeveon Clowney prefers to be traded to the Eagles or Seahawks, the current roster wraps up their preseason against the Jets. Josh McCown returned to the NFL and had a very solid outing in week 3 (17/24, 192, 2). I also wouldn’t be surprised if he was pulled early on Thursday or doesn’t play at all. Cody Kessler should get some good run but I don’t necessarily see him as a viable QB play on this slate. With the recent Desean Jackson news…

…the wide receiver position will be under the microscope. With Jackson down and Alshon Jeffery always injury-prone, I like the depth that the Eagles have created but who will make the cut? JJ Arcega-Whiteside has pretty much solidified his position as WR4 and should ball out again on Thursday while guys play Mack Hollins and Greg Ward fight for a roster spot.

New York Jets: Ty Montgomery and the Jets running game has been the high note of the Jets 1-2 preseason thus far. Despite his expected back up role to Le’Veon Bell and Bilal Powell, both Montgomery and Elijah McGuire should be able to contribute in both the rushing game and passing game this season. I would key in on one or both of these guys in your DFS lineups this week. Additionally, guys like TE Eric Tomlinson and WRs Charone Peake and Trenton Cannon are trying to lock in spots on the 53-man roster.

Players to use in DFS: JJ Arcega-Whiteside (WR-PHI), Greg Ward (WR-PHI), Elijah McGuire (RB-NYJ)

Falcons @ Jaguars

Atlanta Falcons: On a DFS-less note, the Falcons face a few serious position battles including on the offensive line and at the Kicker position. With both the Falcons and Jaguars winless thus far, the most exciting headline in this game is who will break the streak. Former New England Patriot Danny Etling should get a good showing on Thursday who is liable to take off at any minute on a run. From a volume point of view, RB Qadree Ollison should be the most active for the Falcons this week.

Jacksonville Jaguars: On a VERY bright note for the Jaguars defense, rookie Josh Allen is going to be a PROBLEM for opposing offenses this season…

Expect to see at least a half of QB Gardner Minshew on Thursday who has locked up the #2 spot behind Nick Foles with a sprinkle of Alex McGough to fill in for the rest. A few position battles of interest include RB (Thomas Rawls vs. Devante Mays) and WR (Tre McBride, Tyre Brady, C.J. Board and Terelle Pryor Jr).

Players to use in DFS: Qadree Ollison (RB-ATL), Devante Mays (RB-JAX), Tre McBride (WR-Jax)
