Bulletproof Bashers- Sat. Aug. 31 evening slates- C, 1B

CATCHER:

Christian Vazquez, BOS:

Opposing Starting Pitcher: LHP Dillon Peters, LAA

Angels southpaw Dillon Peters has allowed a .373 wOBA to right-handed hitters overall, including a. 404 figure (and .310 batting average) at home. Vazquez counters with a .376 wOBA and .318 ISO against left-handed pitching on the road. He also comes in with a .301 average and  .350 wOBA over 89 August plate appearances.

Vazquez also thrives against the low 90s fastball that serves as Peters’ most frequently thrown pitch to right-handed hitters. The Red Sox backstop owns a .640 wOBA and 53.9 percent hard-contact rate versus the pitch. Meanwhile, Peters surrenders a .453 wOBA and .412 ISO when throwing it. Then, Vazquez also sports a .381 wOBA versus the changeup, which is Peters’ second-most utilized offering versus righty bats.

When Peters exits, Vazquez will also take aim at an Angels bullpen that’s allowed a 5.50 ERA, .294 average and .344 wOBA over the last 10 days of play (158 batters faced).

FIRST BASE:

Ian Desmond, COL:

Opposing Starting Pitcher: RHP Joe Musgrove, PIT

Desmond has been more effective overall versus left-handed pitching this season. However, he still owns a solid .283 average and .334 wOBA against righties at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Pirates starter Joe Musgrove has been generally tough against righty bats on the road, but he does sport a 4.81 xFIP and has allowed a 45.7 percent hard-contact rate to that handedness when traveling.

Desmond has also done very well against Musgrove’s top pitch against righty bats. Musgrove most often throws his low-90s fastball to right-handed hitters and allows a .360 wOBA when throwing it while generating just a 14.3 percent strikeout rate. In turn, Desmond has a .358 wOBA and .393 CXwOBA against that speed of heater. Then, when Musgrove exits, Desmond will face a Pirates bullpen surrendering a 6.65 ERA and an MLB-high .406 wOBA over the last 10 days of play (212 batters faced).
