It seemingly took months for the Houston Texans to finally trade away Jadeveon Clowney. The Seattle Seahawks got him for close to nothing.

We’ve heard every rumor possible when it comes to Jadeveon Clowney this offseason. The biggest rumor was that the Houston Texans were going to use the former No. 1 overall pick to finally shore up their offensive line. It sounded like they were eyeballing the Miami Dolphins and Laremy Tunsil. What they ended up getting was much, much worse.

The Texans were able to get linebacker Jacob Martin, pass rusher Barkevious Mingo and a 3rd-round pick.

So, after all that, the Texans used a great pass rusher to get the scraps of one pass rusher, a linebacker that’s part of the Seahawks’ strength and a middle-round pick? That’s it? Really?

This was not the return Texans fans could have hoped for. I mean, could they have at least asked for Rashaad Penny to help out their running back position? This was a player who’s still 26 years old and was once supposed to change the way defenses play. He’s a talent that we have not seen in a long time.

And he just got traded for scraps. Clowney didn’t get the Texans the help they desperately needed on the offensive line. He didn’t even get them help at running back, a position that should be generally easy to trade for. Nope, the Texans come out of this trade with all the same weaknesses and one major loss of strength.

The Seahawks, on the other hand, do two things that help this team out greatly. Obviously, they add an amazing pass rusher in Clowney, and they were able to clear up some of the logjam they had at linebacker. They were going to move Mingo and Martin to defensive end to help with the logjam, but that means the Seahawks would have two players trying to learn a new position. Now, they have Jadeveon Clowney, who’s a natural there.

It still boggles the mind why the Texans went about this trade the way they did. They waited until after the franchise tag deadline, severely hurting his value. Now, teams cannot sign him to more than the one-year deal he’s on.

This was a colossal loss for the Texans. This was a major win for the Seahawks. We are still flabbergasted that it took this long for Houston to end up with this, when they probably could have made a really nice deal for themselves if they just did it months ago.
