2. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama

It’s safe to say that, after finishing second to Kyler Murray last season, Tua Tagovailoa was one of the favorites entering the 2019 season. Taking on Duke in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback did nothing to make anyone believe that he won’t accomplish just that and make another trip to New York this year.

Despite a sluggish overall start from the Tide, Tagovailoa rebounded for a monster day. The junior signal-caller went 26-of-31 for 336 yards and four touchdowns on the day, though he added just 15 rushing yards. Even still, it was a cool, productive day at the office for the potential first overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft looking to add a nice trophy to his case.

1. Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma

There was little drama about who’s leading the Heisman rankings after Week 1. Jalen Hurts’ debut with the Oklahoma Sooners went about as perfectly as anyone could’ve hoped for. Given the fact that the two quarterbacks before him in Norman captured the award, there were indeed questions if he had that type of potential and he showed against Houston that he does, without question.

Hurts finished the victory over the Cougars as Oklahoma’s leading passer and rusher, going 20-of-23 for 332 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing 16 times for 176 yards and another three touchdowns. It’s worth noting that Houston’s defense is far from being a top-tier unit but even if Hurts’ production takes a minor step back, he’s still positioned himself to make a strong push for three-straight Sooners winning the award.
