Thanks to Antonio Brown, NFL hijacks another college football Saturday
For the second week in a row, the NFL has trumped college football on their own day.
Saturdays are for drinking cold ones with the boys and for watching college football. But for the first two weeks of the season, the NFL has stolen the thunder from the kids.
Last week, it was the Jadeveon Clowney trade to Seattle and the Laremy Tunsil trade to Houston that stole the spotlight from the opening week of the college football season. There weren’t a ton of great games on last Saturday, but it was the first full Saturday of the year. Nevertheless, it took a backseat to the trades in the NFL.
Two weeks ago, it was the surprise retirement by Andrew Luck during the Miami-Florida game. It was the first game of the season and no one cared about it because a potential future Hall of Fame quarterback was retiring at 29-years-old due to injuries.
Fast forward to today and the same thing happened. Before fans could wake up and turn on College GameDay to see what team Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit were picking in the day’s games, the NFL jumped in the spotlight again.
The ongoing Antonio Brown soap opera, which I think has been going on longer than Days of Our Lives and General Hospital combined, had its Raiders season finale.
Brown requested and was granted his release from the team he feuded with ever since they traded a third and fifth round pick with the Pittsburgh Steelers to get him. Finally, Brown was released, the fans had a ton of reaction, and it appeared like college football fans could relax and watch Clemson vs. Texas A&M and the rest of the action.
Not so fast, my friend!
Then, the news broke that Brown was no longer on the street.
The Evil Empire came calling.
Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots signed Brown to a one-year deal worth up to $15 million with $9 million in guarantees.
This was the move many fans joked about when it looked like his time in Oakland was coming to an end. It’s a little less funny knowing it is a reality now and Tom Brady has the best receiver in football over the last five years on his team.
The Patriots lose Rob Gronkowski to retirement in the offseason and effectively replace him with the return of Josh Gordon and get Brown for nothing more than Robert Kraft’s chump change.
What a world.
Only the NFL.
Maybe next week, Saturday can go back to college football and having a few cold ones with the boys. But the way it’s looking, the NFL is a seven-day league now and the news and drama never stop.
