5 storylines to watch in the 2020 PGA Tour season
3. Will Jordan Spieth snap winless drought?
Three-time major champion Jordan Spieth was once considered the next rising star on the PGA Tour. But in the past two years, that star has dimmed considerably.
Spieth won 11 times on tour by the time he turned 24 and spent 26 weeks ranked No. 1 in the world. He heads into 2020, however, more than two years removed from his last victory, the 2017 Open Championship, and has fallen all the way to 33rd in the rankings.
Spieth looked like his old self in 2019, on the greens at least. He was second on tour in strokes gained: putting and first in putting average and one-putt percentage. He led the PGA Tour in putts per round, putting from 10-15 feet, putting from outside 25 feet, and average distance of putts made.
That strength with the putter, though, didn’t translate into solid results. Spieth had just four top-10 finishes in 23 events in 2019, one in his last seven events. He wasn’t a factor at any of the major championships and missed qualifying for the Tour Championship for the second straight year.
A big reason for Spieth’s struggles was his play with the driver. He ranked 181st out of 188 players on tour in driving accuracy last season. He was 176th in strokes gained: off the tee and 179th in greens in regulation. These aren’t the rankings of a player at the top of his game.
Spieth is still just 26 and has a long career ahead of him. But if he doesn’t find a way in 2020 to recapture the form he once had, then his best days may already be behind him.
