The Heisman Trophy race is getting crowded after Justin Fields put on a show in Week 4 but how do the top 10 rankings for the award shake out thus far?

Virtually every Heisman Trophy watch or rankings throughout the first few weeks of the 2019 college football season has looked quite similar at the top. We’ve seen Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa since Week 1. But every subsequent week, we’ve seen a new player firmly enter the Heisman race. It was Joe Burrow a few weeks ago and now Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback has emphatically done the same.

After a suspect start that saw the true sophomore signal-caller have to take a safety to give Miami-Ohio a 5-0 lead, he led the Buckeyes on a torrid offensive place throughout the rest of the first half. Specifically, Fields put on an otherworldly performance only seen in NCAA Football games (RIP) as he accrued six touchdowns in the second quarter before taking a seat at halftime.

Through the first three weeks and in regards to the Heisman rankings, Fields has been in the mix for quite some time. However, having not faced elite competition to this point (and not doing so in Week 4 either) he seemed a tier below the leaders for the 2019 season. A performance like the one on Saturday, though, closes that gap.

At the same time, though, the Heisman candidates that were ahead of Fields prior to Week 4 in the rankings didn’t do anything to lose ground. The aforementioned group of players and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor all had huge games of their own on Saturday to continue cementing their candidacy to win the most prestigious individual award in college football.

With a wild week of action now in the books, though, let’s take a look at the top 10 of the 2019 Heisman Trophy rankings after Week 4. We begin with a first-timer in these rankings that’s getting hard to ignore out of the ACC.
