College football upset picks are always ripe whenever conference matchups start to take over and these teams should be on upset alert in Week 5.

Early in the 2019 college football season, things are still being sorted out as to which teams are for real and which ones aren’t. Upsets are happening left and right and last week was a prime example of that. Not only did ranked teams TCU, Arizona State, Washington State, UCF and Utah all suffer losses to unranked opponents last week but a team like Virginia just narrowly escaped in that regard.

Some of those upsets were easy to see coming and even pick but there were others that were near impossible to identify. After all, who would’ve thought that UCF would suffer their first regular-season loss since the 2016 college football season against a Pittsburgh team hadn’t looked all that impressive, or that a winless UCLA team would go on a scoring barrage against Wazzu to win?

That’s part of the unpredictability of college football, though, which is why we love. As we come into Week 5 of the season, however, upset picks are going to be much more interesting to identify. After all, conference play is starting to heat up in a big way.

There are a number of factors that make conference play in college football so upset-friendly. For one, you always have familiarity and rivalries between these teams that play one another almost every year. Moreover, a conference schedule often means that there are big games looming down the road at almost every turn, putting ranked teams in danger of looking ahead and getting knocked off while doing so.

Subsequently, let’s take a look at the Week 5 slate in college football and decide which ranked teams need to be on upset alert. And, spoiler alert, four of the five teams that could be upset on Friday or Saturday are in conference matchups while the other is facing a top-20 team. We start with a pair of Friday night contests that could be dangerous for unbeaten squads.
